Many people are confused about what the symptoms of covid 19 are.

Congestion or runny nose
Nausea or vomiting
Diarrhea
Fever or chills
Cough
Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Fatigue

These are the symptoms if you need medical treatment

Inability to wake or stay awake
Bluish lips or face\
Trouble breathing
Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
New confusion

As you see, heartburn is not consistent with the findings from the CDC, in the meta-analysis, or systematic reviews of the prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with diagnosed covid 19.

Most of the searches included: diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia, and nausea loss of appetite. In the research, there was no search for “heartburn” included.

How to tell if it’s heartburn from COVID-19?

Heartburn is nevertheless a common symptom reported in a large proportion of the general adult US population.

So here’s a way to differentiate heartburn from chest pressure.

Heartburn: Burning feeling in the chest, usually after eating, may occur at night; the discomfort often worsens when lying down or bending over. Taking liquid antacids may relieve this discomfort.

Chest pain and pressure: There may be trouble breathing related to covid 19; it Does not worsen after eating and lying down and does not respond to liquid antacids.

Do heartburn medicines increase risk of getting COVID 19?

Heartburn medicines are available over the counter, such as antacids, famotidine, and proton pump inhibitors.

Some research has surveyed whether the use of heartburn medications – specifically proton pump inhibitors – increases your risk of getting covid -19.

The American research of Gastroenterology surveyed patients and found that patients using PPIs twice daily had higher odds of testing positive for covid 19 than those using PPIs daily.

It showed data, and we can’t assume that PPIs automatically cause covid 19.

Must do more clinical trials to prove further that heartburn medications increase your chances of getting covid 19.

Do heartburn medications help treat COVID-19?

Although studies show that heartburn medications, such as proton pump inhibitors, may increase the chances of getting COVID-19, different studies have found that taking heartburn medications may have benefits when treating coronavirus.

Retrospective research done from The Gastroenterology Journal found that the use of famotidine was associated with a decreased risk of patients being intubated or dying from covid 19 compared to those who did not receive famotidine.

However, although this study showed promising data, randomized clinical trials can determine if famotidine is effective against COVID-19. Hence, it is not advised to take famotidine for the prevention of Covid-19.
