Covid Vaccine for Asthma Patients

Asthma is a chronic condition in which the airway becomes narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. It can lead to breathing difficulty and should produce a wheezing sound when you breathe out.

For some people, asthma is a common health condition. For others, it can be a significant health condition that interferes with daily activities and lead to a life-threatening asthma attack.

Asthma cannot cure entirely, but we can do symptomatic management. Because asthma may change over time, you must work with your doctor to advise and take medication according to symptoms and adjust treatment if needed.

Asthma leads to difficulty in breathing, chest pain, cough, and wheezing. It can usually be managed with an asthma pump to treat symptoms.

It is a long-term problem in the air pipe that takes air into your lungs, making it problematic for you to breathe in this condition; airways get so narrow that air cannot move freely, and it can cause severe coughing and breathlessness, known as asthma attacks.

There’s no cure, but some people can control their symptoms and prevent critical health problems.

Causes of asthma

The causes of asthma increase the reaction of the air pipe and small air pipe in the lungs to the various stimulants that may lead to narrowing the airways and difficulty breathing.

A combination of certain factors causes asthma.

  • Change in temperature unusually cold air
  • Change in humidity dry air
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Industrial smoke
  • Exceed level of ozone
  • Sulfur dioxide
  • Exhaust fumes
  • Aerosol sprays
  • Strong odors perfumes
  • Allergen inhalation
  • Exposure to pesticide
  • Exposure to certain types of PVC
  • Animal dander
  • Dust mites molds allergens
  • Foods treated with sulfates
  • Anxiety and Fear
  • Vital upper respiratory infection,
  • Sinusitis
  • Medications like Aspirin and NSAIDs, Β-blockers
  • Metal salts
  • Endotoxin exposure, such as tobacco smoke, dust, animal products, can lead to asthma.

Severe asthma symptom in adult

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Wheezing
  • The whistling sound is heard when the person breathes.
  • Coughing, especially at night
  • Breathing difficulties when laughing or during exercise
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty in talking
  • Anxiousness or panic
  • Fatigue
  • Severe acute asthma can happen due to some complications such as rib fractures, pneumothorax, pneumonia, and status asthmatics.

Types of asthma

There are different types of asthma.

Acute severe Asthma

  • The status of asthmatics is caused due to the unfortunate situation of asthma in that the corticosteroids and bronchodilators do not respond to it.
  • In some cases, it is due to infection, air pollution, allergen due to inappropriate medications.

Allergic Asthma

It is the standard type of asthma, it includes

  • pollen
  • dust
  • food

Nonallergic

The irritants are present in the air, not related to allergies. These irritants might include:

  • Burning wood
  • cigarette smoke
  • cold air
  • air pollution
  • viral illnesses
  • air fresheners
  • household cleaning products
  • perfumes

Aspirin-induced Asthma

  • Aspirin-induced asthma (AIA) is usually severe.
  • It’s felt by taking aspirin or another NSAID (a no steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), such as naproxen (Aleve) or ibuprofen (Advil).
  • The symptoms may start after a minute or hours. These patients also have nasal polyps.

Nocturnal Asthma

In this type of asthma, symptoms usually worsen at night. Symptoms that trigger asthma at night include:

Cough-variant Asthma (CVA)

  • Cough-variant asthma (CVA) doesn’t have specific asthma symptoms of wheezing and shortness of breath. It’s associated with a persistent, dry cough.
  • If it does not cure well, CVA may lead to full-blown asthma flares that include the other more common symptoms.

Exercise-induced

  • Exercise can trigger air pipe constriction for those with asthma or without asthmatic people.
  • Exercise-induced constriction of air pipe is familiar with professional athletes.
  • The highest rates are among cyclists and swimmers in any weather when cold or dry.
  • Exercise-induced constriction of air pipe usually affects people within a few minutes of starting exercise and up to 10–15 minutes after physical activity.

Occupational induced

Occupational asthma that occurs at the industrial workplace include

  • Rubber latex
  • Dust
  • Pollens
  • Animal protein
  • Gases, ashes, fumes
  • Chemicals
  • Farming
  • Textile
  • Wooden work
  • Manufacturing

Asthma screening

There’s no single test that will decide if you have asthma symptoms. Instead, to declare asthma, your doctor will use a variety of criteria to determine asthma.

The subsequent investigation can help to diagnose asthma:

Health history

Suppose you have a family history of any breathing disorder, your risk increases. Tell your doctor about this genetic connection.

Physical exam

Your doctor will examine with a stethoscope and listen to your breathing sound. The doctor will also do a skin test to look for an allergic reaction, such as skin disease. Allergies also increase your risk of asthma.

Breathing tests

Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) measure airflow into and out of your lungs. For the most common test, the spirometry test, you blow into a device used to measure the speed of the air.

Doctors don’t use breathing tests in children under five years of age because it’s tough to get accurate results.

Treatment of asthma

Treatments of asthma fall into 3 primary categories:

  • Breathing exercise
  • Quick-relief asthma treatments
  • Long-term asthma control medications

Breathing exercises

  • Breathing exercises will help you get more air into and out of your lungs. After a long time, this may increase lung capacity and slow down severe asthma symptoms.
  • Your doctor or an occupational therapist will help you learn these breathing exercises to decrease asthma symptoms.

Quick-relief Asthma Treatments

  • While asthma symptoms worsen or an asthma attack, these medications should provide quick relief to help you breathe again.
  • Bronchodilators work within minutes to relax muscle tightness around your airways. That can use as an inhaler (rescue) or nebulizer.
  • If someone is having symptoms like an asthma attack, tell them to sit in an upright position and assist in using an inhaler or nebulizer to rescue them. Two to six breaths of medication should help to relieve their symptoms.
  • Emergency medical attention is needed if symptoms may last long for more than 20 minutes, and the second round of medication doesn’t help relieve symptoms.
  • If you regularly and frequently need to use quick-relief medications, you should ask your doctor about another choice of medication for long-term asthma control.

Long-term asthma control medications

  • Long-term asthma control medications are taken daily to reduce the numbers and severity of your asthma symptoms, but they don’t manage the immediate symptoms of asthma.
  • Anti-inflammatories medication: it used with an inhaler, corticosteroids that reduce inflammation and swellings.
  • It helps to take a breath easily.
  • These will help to stop your muscles from tightening around your airways.
  • Long-acting bronchodilators. these can make with the combination of anti-inflammatory medications
  • Biologic therapy drugs. These are new injectable medications that may help people with severe asthma.

Asthma treatment medications

  • Inhaled corticosteroids.
  • Combination inhalers that contain both LABA and corticosteroid
  • Long-acting beta-agonists (LABAs)
  • Theophylline.
  • Leukotriene modifiers.

Prevention of asthma

In addition to using asthma control medications, you can take other steps to make yourself healthier and reduce your risk of asthma attacks. These include
