Does Milk Help With Acid Reflux?

Some people use cow’s milk as a natural remedy for acid reflux, while others say it worsens the condition.

Calcium may offer amazing benefits

Calcium carbonate is commonly used as an acid-neutralizing supplement.

One cup of cow’s milk provides 20 to 23% of the Daily Value for calcium, depending on whether it’s whole or low-fat. Because of its high-level calcium content, some claim that it’s a natural Acid reflux remedy.

Research in 11,690 people learned that a high dietary calcium intake was associated with a reduced risk of Acid reflux.

Calcium is also an important mineral for muscles tone.

Some People with GERD tend to have a weakened lower esophageal sphincter, the muscle that would usually check your stomach’s contents from coming back up.

Research in 18 people with Acid reflux found that taking calcium carbonate caused an increase in LES muscle tone in 50% of situations.

These results recommend that taking this supplement to improve muscle function may be another way to treat acid reflux.


Protein may be helpful

Milk is the source of protein, providing about 8 grams per 1 cup.

Research in Acid reflux found that those who consumed more protein were less likely to have symptoms.

Studies believe that protein may help prevent Acid reflux because it excites gastrin flow.

Gastrin is a hormone that also improves LES contraction and promotes emptying your stomach’s contents, also known as gastric emptying. It means that less food is available to move back up.

But, gastrin is also included in the secretion of stomach acid, which may end up increasing the burning feeling in your chest.

Accordingly, it’s unclear whether the protein in milk prevents or worsens Acid reflux.

Milk could make Acid reflux worse

One cup of milk packs 7-8 grams of fat, and researches show that fatty foods are a common trigger for Acid reflux.

High-fat foods relax the LES muscle, making it carefully for your stomach’s contents to acid reflux back up.

Also, since fats are harder to digest than protein and carbs, they delay gastric emptying. It means that the stomach empties its contents at a slower rate, an effect that’s already common among people with Acid reflux.

Delayed gastric emptying has been connected with increased esophageal exposure to gastric acid and a higher amount of food available to move backward to the esophagus. These factors would make Acid reflux worse.

If you don’t give up drinking milk, you can reduced-fat option. It can contain 0–2.5 grams of fat, depending on whether it’s skimmed and low-fat.

Does milk help acid reflux?

Everybody is different; drinking milk may or may not worsen your Acid reflux.
Some people recommend switching to goat’s milk or almond milk for Acid reflux reduction. But, there are not enough scientific researches has been done to confirm these recommendations.

On the one hand, goat’s milk is connected with better digestibility than cow’s milk. But, on the other hand, investigation shows that it has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, which may benefit your health.

However, it’s slightly high in fat, which may worsen your symptoms. One cup of goat’s milk packs 11 grams of fat, compared with 8 grams for the same serving of whole cow’s milk.

On the other hand, almond milk reduces acid reflux symptoms due to its alkaline nature.

The acidity or alkalinity of food is held by its pH level, ranging from 0 to 14.

While cow’s milk produces a pH of 6.7, almond milk has one of 8.4. Thus, some believe it may help neutralize stomach acids, but further investigation is required to confirm this claim.

While these two options may be help digested than cow’s milk, due to the lack of scientific proof, you may need to test for yourself whether you allow one better than the other.


Milk holds its pros and cons when it comes to reducing Acid reflux.
While calcium and protein from skimmed milk may buffer stomach acids, full-fat milk may increase Acid reflux symptoms.

But, you can give low-fat or skim a try or even switch to a milk substitute if you feel it better suit you.
