Chickenpox, known as varicella, is a contagious infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus.

Causes

Chickenpox is causing by a virus called varicella-zoster. People become infected after contact with an infected adult or child.

It is essential to drink lots of fluids, preferably water, to prevent dehydration. Some doctors recommend sugar-free popsicles to children who are not drinking enough.

Itchiness becomes severe, but it is essential to minimize scratching to reduce.

Chickenpox and pregnancy

During pregnancy, there is a higher risk of developing pneumonia with chickenpox.

There is a risk of catching the infection onto the fetus.

If infection occurs during the 20 weeks of pregnancy, fetal varicella syndrome risks scarring, brain drainage, eye problems, and shortened arms or legs.

If the infection happens next in pregnancy, varicella is transmitted to the fetus, and the baby is born with varicella.

Chickenpox and a weakened immune system

The risks of catching chickenpox and complications are higher in people with a weakened immune system.

  • Chronic condition

Diagnosis

A doctor will know whether a child and adult have chickenpox by looking and asking some questions. No medical tests are needed to aid in the diagnosis. In rare cases, chickenpox can be confused with some types of insect bites.
