In modern days, people are more concerned about body weight and shaping of the body, so to face them, they are eating an inadequate amount of food excessively or less.

Food Intake Eating disorders are diseases that occur due to overeating or under eating, affecting physical and emotional health.

Biological  Factors

Genetic and Biochemical : Specific genes are responsible for causing an eating disorder. Any abnormality in brain chemicals 

Immune System :Eating disorder elevates the studies showing autoantibodies that affect hormones and regulate appetite control and stress Response.

Infection: Streptococcal infection can lead to eating problems. Factor in the development of Anorexia Nervosa.

Brain  Lesions: There are lesions to the right frontal lobe or the temporal lobe that can cause eating disorders’ pathological symptoms.

Obstetric Complications : Maternal Anemia, very preterm birth (> 32 weeks), being born small for gestational age, cephalhematoma.

Eating disorders are complex problems expressed through behavior, emotions, and physical effect on a person’s body. Signs can vary greatly between each type of disorder and each person.

Some of these signs may be:

  • Eat or not eat tiny portions of food
  • Fear of being average weight
  • Excessive physical exercise
  • A significant change in weight
  • Social isolation
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Stomach cramps
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Dizziness
  • Sleep problems such as insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Dry skin
  • Tooth decay or tooth discoloration due to vomiting

Types of eating disorder

Anorexia Nervosa

An anorexia nervosa person is having particular behavioral and psychopathological symptoms and significant physical signs. The majority is females, and the onset is during adolescence. Due to dear of weight gain or drive of thinness.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia Nervosa is excessive eating of food followed by guilt, humiliation, depression, and self-condemnation. 

Include frequently consuming abnormally large portions of food within a specific period and use compensatory measures to prevent weight gain. E.g., use of laxative, induced vomiting.

Binge Eating Disorder

 A person is eating a large amount of food in a short period. The feeling of being “out of control” during binges Eating food rapidly without really tasting it.

Rumination disorder

In this disorder, a person has regurgitated the food in case of anorexia, bulimia, and binge episodes without any nauseated feelings. It is mainly seen in infancy.

Healthy eating habits should be encouraged to the patient. Ensure the patient is taking carbohydrate, protein, and fat if the patient is not taking a high energy drink. Take help from a psychologist psychiatrist to treat this disorder. To prevent malnutrition healthy balanced diet is required.

  • Electrocardiogram.
  • Complete physical examination.
  • Central nervous system abnormalities, cancer, malabsorption syndrome.
  • Comprehensive blood testing, cholesterol level, total protein, electrolytes, fasting blood sugar, and serum amylase level.
  • ECG reading irregular.

Cognitive behavior therapy: In cognitive therapy, change negative thoughts with positive thoughts and motivation.

Family therapy: In family therapy, family members work as a team to mold the behavior of the patient.
